Installation process for Asphalt Shingles

Before installing asphalt shingles on a residential house, proper preparation is essential to ensure durability, weather resistance, and a professional finish. We follow Alberta's roofing codes and the best practices in our industry. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the preparation process:

1. Inspection & Planning

  • Inspect Roof Structure: Ensure the roof deck is in good state and secured to walk on. Everything can start from the attic.
  • Choose the best shingles that fits your house: Select shingles suitable for the climate and architectural style of the house.
  • Fall in love on how we do things: Having a peek at our inspection, you will see the way we do things, and every customer seems to love it. Our experience is so unique, our customers are becoming our lifelong fans.

2. Remove Old Roof system:

  • When it comes to actually starting working on your home we start by these critical steps. Remove existing shingles, nails, debris, clean out by hand the gutters and dispose of the underlayment.
  • Dispose of old materials properly into a trailer to be taken to the waste management.
  • Inspect the roof deck for any damage or structural weaknesses. If any concerns arise, the homeowner will receive real-time photographs, allowing them to make an informed decision based on the recommendations provided by our specialists.

3. Repair & Reinforce Roof Deck

  • Replace any rotted or damaged plywood sheathing.
  • Ensure the deck is smooth, clean, and dry.
  • Re-secure loose decking with appropriate nails or screws.

4. Clean roof deck and gutters

  • With the use of a broom, we collect all the debris left on the roof deck.
  • Gutters are cleaned by hand  to make sure they are as clean as possible.

5. Install drip edge protection

  • Drip edge flashings play a vital role in your roofing system by directing water away from the edges and other sensitive areas, safeguarding underlying structures. They effectively shield the roofing and fascia from moisture damage caused by water runoff, ensuring long-term protection against potential wear from the elements.

6. Install Ice & Water protector membrane

  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of debris.
  • Starting at the eaves, roll the membrane horizontally across the roof deck.
  • Peel off the backing and press the membrane firmly onto the roof deck, ensuring it adheres smoothly without wrinkles or bubbles.

7. Install Roof Underlayment protector

  • Use synthetic underlayment to provide an additional moisture barrier.
  • Overlap sheets according to manufacturer guidelines to prevent leaks.
  • Secure underlayment with staples.

8. Install metal valleys

  • A roof valley is the internal angle formed where two sloping roof sections meet. Metal valleys are used in these areas to provide a durable and watertight channel for rainwater and snow runoff, directing it toward the gutters and preventing leaks.

9. Prepare for Shingle Installation

  • Have tools ready: hammer, compressor running, roofing coil nails, utility knife, chalk line, and roofing nailers.
  • Stage materials properly to avoid unnecessary walking on the roof.

10. Install Hip And Ridge

  • They are designed for the ridge, the highest part of a sloped roof where two sides meet, and for the hips, where roof planes form an angle
  • It is essential to ensure that the installation is impeccably flat, eliminating any risk of blow-offs and guaranteeing optimal performance.

11. Install Proper Ventilation

  • Adequate airflow provides significant advantages for your attic space, enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring a comfortable living environment regardless of the season
  • Investing in strategic ventilation solutions will ultimately contribute to the longevity and functionality of your home.

12. Proper use of caulking:

  • Caulking will be placed accordingly to prevent any water filtering into your home.

13. Throughout cleaning on the roof and all around the house.

  • Hand picked all large scale material found onto the new roof system and gutters.
  • Use of a leaf blower for granules and small scale material for better performance.
  • Use of heavy duty magnets to make sure no nails are left behind around the house and very importantly the driveways.
  • Our goal is always to leave the property as clean as it was or better, giving the idea that we weren’t even there.

14. Completed notification to homeowner

  • Now that the project has ended. The homeowner will get notified by text or personally (if they are home) letting them know how the project went and to minimize any future headaches by standing behind our 10 year workmanship warranty.
  • Now they can  park their vehicle in the driveway.
  • Our team is ready to answer any questions that the homeowner may have after the installation.
